So, you’re getting ready to paint the exterior of your Nashville home… How do you feel? Maybe a little excited for the possibilities? It’s been a while and you’re ready for a new look. Maybe you’re a little apprehensive too, especially since every local painting company says they’re the best and you really want to be sure you invest your home improvement dollars wisely.
You’re in the right place. Not just because we believe in our exterior painting services and process, but also because we want to help you understand what to look for, what to expect, and what to avoid. This is a big deal and it’s worth doing right.
Not an exhaustive list, but certainly a good start. Few projects have such an immediate impact on your home’s overall appearance and marketability, making an exterior repaint a clear win from every angle. And, can we camp out on the second benefit for a minute? Fresh paint might look incredible, but it offers a critical first line of defense against the elements, decay, and pest intrusion. In other words, your exterior paint needs to offer both form and function.
Before we explain our process, you should know that we’re what we like to call a “longevity painter.” A lot of painting companies will quickly paint your house, and it will even look good, but the process isn’t designed to last. In three or four years you’ll likely start to experience paint failure. Full transparency? Our approach is more expensive initially, but it pays for itself over the years. In fact, we offer an industry leading 10-year warranty, with most projects not needing a full repaint for 12 or more years. If you do the math, the numbers work in your favor.
Here’s a closer look at our approach:
Pressure wash to remove mold, mildew, algae, pollen, etc.
Failing paint is razor scraped to remove it fully.
Loose, failing caulking is scraped or cut out, then replaced with products that are rated for 12+ years.
Spot prime with a bonding primer to give your new paint a strong, secure surface.
Rotten wood is addressed and preferably upgraded with PVC, or another rot-proof alternative.
The first coat of paint is sprayed on.
We then use brushes and rollers to work the paint into the surface, ensuring that the product really saturates and bonds with your siding. This is done for wood siding, but really isn’t necessary (or advisable) for metal, aluminum, or vinyl.
Finally, we spray a topcoat.
It’s worth really emphasizing the “back rolling” we do after that first coat of paint. A lot of exterior painting companies only spray the paint on: the “spray and let it lay” method. It’s quicker, cheaper, and easier, but it creates more of a wrap around your house rather than a solid, fully adhered coating. It’s just a matter of time before it fails.
The results are important, but so is your experience!
Daily cleanup, ensuring that your home doesn’t turn into a messy jobsite
Rigorous training and quality assurance standards
Protect your landscaping from scorching or damage
No mess, splatters, or paint left on your garden house spigot
No hoses dragged through your mulch or flower beds
No chemical damage from brushes and buckets being rinsed in your yard
Because you deserve a premium product, process, and experience. We know how to do the job right and can guarantee your total satisfaction.
We use Sherwin-Williams’ Emerald line. It’s a fantastic product with proven performance.
It varies depending on the nature and condition of your siding, but in short, surface preparation involves doing whatever it takes to ensure that you’re painting a clean, healthy, sound surface.
Surface prep makes or breaks your project. If you minimize those critical early steps you’ll shortchange the entire process, painting over problems that will inevitably come back to bite you.
It depends largely on the quality of the products and paint job. While many homeowners see paint failure after 4-5 years, we offer a 10-year warranty and often see homes we paint last longer before needing another repaint.
Yes, it does! Paint adds both value and marketability, making it a wise investment for any homeowner. Whether you’re selling your home or not, your paint plays an important role.
Our advice is to not wait until total paint failure. The longer you wait the more damage is incurred, the more the existing paint deteriorates, and the more involved (and expensive) your repaint will be. Invest in a quality paint job, and then invest in routine maintenance and touch-ups for the best value possible.
